Frightened
Mar 3rd, 2010, 10:26pm

Adrian has for quite some time now been frightened to go to the toilet by himself or be upstairs or downstairs by himself. He gets Cassie to fetch things for him, or to come upstairs/downstairs with him (makes it into a game so she's happy to join in).

I thought it would go away after a time, but it hasn't. We've re-assured him, told him there is nothing to be frightened of. Not sure what else to do.

Jacinth is the same.  She needs to know we are there.

Perhaps you need to go to the bottom of the stairs and chat to him when he is up there getting something so he knows you are there.  I find the only way to stop J from yelling is to talk to her when I pop upstairs, telling her how long I will be and what I am doing.

this reminds me of my brother! he was petrified to be on his own up/downstairs etc for a year or two, all because he saw a bit of watership down and became obsessed with the idea that the 'sabertooth rabbit' was going to attack him.

is it possible that he could have seen something like that as my brother was about the same age when his started.

Well I don't think its anything specific that he is frightened of, just bad things in general. Maybe its an age/awareness thing, more aware that there are dangers in the world, or more imagination..

we do sometimes stand at the bottom of the stairs when he pops up to the loo.

I just hope that he grows out of it soon.

sounds like it might be a "phase" even if it is a long lasting one.  We haven't had anything like that, but then we've only ever lived in one storey houses as well.

Matthew is exactly the same

he will wet himself rather than go into the bathroom if he can't find the cord....

I really hope its just a phase - having to go up and down stairs loads extra isn't good

its not anything specific here either just he's frightened of monsters
