wetting the bed :(
Mar 10th, 2010, 10:06am

After almost a year of being dry, and having NEVER in all that time had an accident over night, Ada has wet the bed every night for the last week and it's driving me insane!!!

I've tried talking to her about it and asking why she doesn't call mummy, and she doesn't know. she says she's being silly. i've tried asking if there is anything upsetting her/making her sad and she just says that she's worried that jamie has chicken pox, but this started before he came out with spots so i really don't think it is that!

I just don't know what to do, i'm washing bedding daily now, and am very glad we have a waterproof mattress. I am loathed to put her back in nappies because i almost feel it will encourage her Sad She has got far worse during the day as well.

I'm wondering if it is attention seeking because i'm having to deal with Jamie a lot and because Ermentrude is on the way, but there is nothing much I can do about that! I really don't know what to think/do any more.

She hasn't complained of any tummy/bottom pain and it doesn't smell funny so i don't think it's an infection causing it.

help!

Cassie did something similar to this a while back. She doesn't drink much but also holds in her wee as long as she can, so sometimes just holds it in too long.

with the night time we tried to make sure she didn't  drink loads before bed, that she went for a wee after stories and before sleep, and we also lifted her when we went to bed to go for a wee so she would have less in her.

the bed wetting stopped after a short while, but I don't think there was any particular reason for it.

I've heard that it's not necessarily unusual.  Also, with the imminent arrival of Ermentrude, that could be playing a part in it, whether she realises it or not.  Just change and disruption to the family - and she's older this time around that she was when Jamie was born, so maybe she's not sure where she'll fit in when the new baby arrives or whatever?  Although bedwetting wasn't our specific issue when Athalie was born, Ella's behaviour was markedly awful in the weeks leading up to Athalie's birth and in the 2 week's afterwards, but when she realised that she was still Mummy's big girl, and that the baby mostly sleeps, everything went back to normal.  From what I can gather from friends in similar situations, bedwetting is often the symptom of this uncertainty.

Have you done a wee sample to make sure it's not a uti of some description?

Otherwise, huge hugs as I know exactly what you're going through with the constant sheet washing - we're doing it with EG, although we're sure it's uti/inflammatory stuff going on.  It's just EXHAUSTING and demoralising all at the same time.

Well I tried limiting how much juice she had, waking her for a wee when we went to bed, and then she woke at 6 in floods of tears shouting she needed a wee and didn't make it to the loo - so another wet bed.

I've got a sample from her and I'll be taking it over to the doctors as soon as they open - hoping that chris will watch the kids briefly while i pop it over, and that they will not mind an unsolicited sample. I can't really take them in while jamie has the chicken pox as we'll infect half the waiting room.

I've tried talking to her and reassuring her that mummy loves her very much and that she doesn't need to worry about the new baby coming, but it hasn't helped. She doesn't say anything about being worried - just how excited she is about helping and whether she thinks it will be a boy or a girl etc... we shall see.

Glad you were able to get a wee sample to take to the dr.  Hope the results show something that you can actually do something about.

We did all the reassuring thing too, and Ella was also very excited about bubs coming, it was just a subconscious thing, I think.

I really, really hope this resolves itself for you guys soon.

Ada stayed dry last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So for the first time in a week I don't have to wash her bedding!!

I've given her two stickers and hopefully that will act as an incentive to keep doing the same!

Urine sample yesterday was negative but they've sent it to the lab anyway to double check.

Still no idea what's been causing it, so i can't see this being the last time it happens, but i'm very grateful for one dry night!!

Hey Nikki,

Just wanted to check in and see how Ada is going with the whole bed wetting thing.

If she's all dry now, that's ace!   Smiley

However, if you're still having problems, we finally saw the paediatrician yesterday with Ella-Grace (2 weeks early, too!) and he gave us a couple of tips that I thought might be worth passing on.

Firstly, his diagnosis was vulvavaginitis - an inflammation of said areas and is apparently super common in young girls.  The cause of it is because little girls have very little oestrogen until they hit puberty, the membranes in that area are paper thin and therefore extremely easy to irritate.  And of course once it's irritated it's sore and itchy and so the little girl scratches, rubs or whatever which only exacerbates the problem.

The suggestions he made are very easy and certainly won't do any harm if it's not the issue, so they may be worth a try...

1. White vinegar baths.  Pour some vinegar into a relatively shallow bath and allow Ada to sit in it for 10-15 min.  Helps reduce the irritability of the area.

2. Use nappy cream on the area

3. If Ada has never been "wormed" then just do it as a precaution.  Dr Hart looked at Ella-Grace and said he didn't see any evidence of worms, but sometimes the worms can be sneaky and only showthemselves at night where they irritate the delicate areas, so it's an easy enough thing to do and again, it won't hurt her if thereare no worms.

4. Make sure her knickers are loose and easy to breathe.  I realise now that one of Ella's major issues with this is that she tends to pull her knickers up so high, she may as well be wearing a g-string!  Shocked  I have recently bought her different, slightly larger knickers, so hopefully that will also help.

Think that's it.  Hopefully you don't need any of that advice, but if you do, hopefully something works.

i'm glad that the paed was able to help! fingers crossed EG's problems sort themselves now!

Ada has been dry for a week now (woohoo!!!!) granny had a talk with her and then we put her potty in her room so if she didnt want to leave her bedroom or wake us up then she could do it herself.

i'll definitely keep note of those hints for the future though!
